Newborn photos are a gift you give to not only yourself but your child and the rest of the family who will cherish those special portraits more and more as the years go by. But if this is your first newborn photo session, you might be unsure about the process and how it works. When should you schedule your newborn session, and how do you get started? As Markham, Ontario’s premier in-home newborn photographer, I’m happy to answer these common questions.

When Should Newborn Photos Be Taken?

Every photographer has slightly different timeframes they prefer, but in general, I schedule newborn photo shoots to take place when babies are 10-16 days old.

Why is this, exactly? First, in their first two weeks or so, babies are much sleepier than they are when they’re past this time. This makes it easier for me to guide your baby into the cute poses parents love and for us to get plenty of sweet, sleepy portraits like the ones featured in this post. Second, your baby will start growing quickly before you know it! Newborn photos in these first few weeks allow us to highlight how adorably tiny your baby is at the start of their life. Trust me, you’ll be thrilled that you have photos of those teeny fingers and toes when they aren’t so teeny anymore!

This timeframe isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, though. If your baby has to spend their first few weeks in the hospital, for example, or if there are other reasons we aren’t able to take your portraits in the first 10-16 days, I may still be able to offer a newborn session but the session may just be a little different.

When Should You Book Newborn Photos?

A common question parents ask is, “How could you schedule a newborn photo session if you don’t know when the baby will be born? Or do you have to schedule last-minute after the baby arrives?”

It’s best to book your newborn photographer during your pregnancy (ideally during your second trimester or early in your third trimester). This way, it’s more likely that I’ll have space in my schedule and it lets you cross this task off your list. I’ll reserve space for you in my calendar, based on the month of your due date. When your baby is born, you’ll contact me and we’ll set a specific date and time for your session.

What If My Baby Is Almost Here (or Has Already Arrived)? Can I Still Book Newborn Photography?

Many parents don’t think about newborn photography until late in their pregnancy, or they don’t think they want newborn photos until they see their new baby’s precious little face. It’s always worth contacting me to find out if I can squeeze you in!
